St. John Melchior Bosco often called Don Bosco was born in a small village of Becchi, close to Turin, Italy on 16th August 1815. Having been born in a poor farming family and losing his father when he was two years old, he grew up with his two elder brothers under the guidance of his mother Margherita Occhiena.
At the age of nine he had a dream that shaped his life’s mission. Growing up and trying to balance school and farming was not easy. After overcoming many obstacles, he was ordained a priest in 1841 and began his ministry in Turin, Italy. It is here, where he encountered many young boys living in poverty and exposed to crime and exploitation.
Determined to make a difference, Don Bosco opened an oratory, a place where boys could gather for education, recreation, and spiritual guidance. This marked the beginning of his innovative approach to education, characterized by kindness, understanding, and preventive measures rather than punishment.
He dedicated his life to the welfare and education of the disadvantaged youth, founding the Salesian Society in 1859 officially known as the Society of St. Francis de Sales, the Salesians of Don Bosco. It was dedicated to the education and welfare of disadvantaged and the working class youth.
Bosco’s Preventive system of education became widely recognized and adopted, earning him the title of “Father and Teacher of Youth.”
Don Bosco emphasized the importance of a holistic education that nurtured the physical, intellectual, socio-emotional, and spiritual development of young people.
Our aim is to uplift communities through partnerships, innovation, and unwavering dedication to the Salesian mission.
